Opera 10.51 launched with packages for Ubuntu and Fedora

Posted on 22 March 2010 by admin

Opera which advertises with the slogan “fastest browser on world ” has launched its new version Opera 10.51 with packages .deb and .rpm for Ubuntu and Fedora. According to my personal view Opera is a nice browser which offers high browsing speed than other browsers like firefox. But what makes me use firefox is the tonnes of addons and easier to use interface which offers everything one could expect from a webbrowser. But if you are interested in trying out something new, opera is really a nice choice. Opera now offers features like unite which helps to bring people and information together in a personal and private way. Opera turbo is another nice feature which offers higher browsing speed on slower connections. Opera link is another nice feature in opera which enables you to synchronize bookmarks and more. You need to note that Opera for linux is still in its alpha state .

Posted on 17 January 2010 by admin

Linux is an operating system which is usually available for free with the full source code ,  so that you can modify it to suite your needs .Due to this reason , these days there are more than 300 Linux distros . I Will make Linux comparisons for the most popular Linux distributions . Here I present you with the pros and cons of each Linux distribution.

ArchLinux :

ArchLinux enjoys , user customization to a large extent . ArchLinux is meant for customization  . ArchLinux can have any desktop environment like gnome , kde or anything else like fluxbox, ratpoison etc . ArchLinux is available for free and supports X86 processors both 32 and 64 bit. ArchLinux , has a package manager named pacman , which has the default package .tar.gz . Pacman does not offer any graphical installation procedure. ArchLinux offers bydefault has no graphical interface and won’t work well on a Live CD/DVD. ArchLinux offers support for ext4 filesystem now.

Centos :

Centos is a highly stable Linux distributions aimed at workstations and servers . Centos , by default has gnome desktop environment . Processor architectures like x86 and IA-64 are supported ..rpm is the default package available for this Linux distro and package manager is named  yum/up2date and RPM. Centos supports live cd environment . Centos is not meant for beginners .

Debian :

One of the most popular Linux distributions . Debian stands for stability and is used in servers , workstations and even for general use .Debian has a large number of followers , mainly the most popular distro Ubuntu Linux is based on unstable version of Debian .Debian supports a large number of desktop environments like kde , fluxbox ,gnome ,xfce etc . Desktop managers are usually based on the installation in case of Debian . Debian supports ext4 filesystem and other older stuff like ext3,ext2,jfs and much more.Debian supports almost all processor architectures .

Gentoo :

Highly customizable Linux distro not meant for beginners . It is for everyday use and updates are available almost every week . Gentoo Linux does not possess a default filesystem . Gentoo has one of the largest support for processor architectures , nearly supporting almost all processors .  Default package manager in Gentoo Linux is known as portage and default package format is ebuild . Gentoo possess graphical installation facility also.

I will be extending this list with much more linux distros like fedora , ubuntu and much more .. feel free to post your comments .

SPEED UP YOUR FEDORA

Posted on 15 January 2010 by admin

Here are some tips to speed up your fedora machine.I have tried these myself  on my system running on Fedora 12 and found the tweaks  very effective.

1.Disable unwanted services.

This will definitely speed up your system to an extent.But dont end up disabling essential services(this could do you harm rather than speeding up your system).Here are some suggestions

a.First boot  – This is required only for the first boot after installation and hence can be disabled after that.

b.Cups  -These should enabled only if  you have CUPS compatible printer that works in Fedora attached to your .computer directly or through a network connection.

c.Httpd – This is Apache HTTP web server.It can be disabled unless you are trying some web development activity .

d.Irda – IrDA support infrared communications between devices (laptops, PDA’s, mobile phones, calculators, etc). This should not be enabled for most users.

e.Isdn – This is another form of internet connect service/hardware. Unless you have an ISDN modem disable this.

f.Mdmonitor – Is used for checking  Software RAID or LVM information.Not essential

There are more to mention.Try out that yourself :)

2.Disable SElinux.

Selinux is for security enhancements and may be disabled in your home desktop.To disable SElinux you should modify the /etc/selinux/config.

After making changes as given below reboot your system.

# cat /etc/selinux/config

SELINUX=disabled

SELINUXTYPE=targeted

SETLOCALDEFS=0

Now enjoy your fedora at greater speeds….
