Opera 10.51 launched with packages for Ubuntu and Fedora

Posted on 22 March 2010 by admin

Opera which advertises with the slogan “fastest browser on world ” has launched its new version Opera 10.51 with packages .deb and .rpm for Ubuntu and Fedora. According to my personal view Opera is a nice browser which offers high browsing speed than other browsers like firefox. But what makes me use firefox is the tonnes of addons and easier to use interface which offers everything one could expect from a webbrowser. But if you are interested in trying out something new, opera is really a nice choice. Opera now offers features like unite which helps to bring people and information together in a personal and private way. Opera turbo is another nice feature which offers higher browsing speed on slower connections. Opera link is another nice feature in opera which enables you to synchronize bookmarks and more. You need to note that Opera for linux is still in its alpha state .

Posted on 13 February 2010 by admin

Ok, I am a linux guy and most of you will be thinking that why I am writing this . Let me say , even though many people are agreeing with the statement Ubuntu is always better than Windows , there are a lot of people how think that Ubuntu has too few applications available for use . Ubuntu would be more secure , most faster and more stable , but is it up to par with Windows in doing things , like can we use photoshop cs 4 in linux , or can we play assassins creed 2 in Ubuntu . I am not promising you that you could , but I assure you that you can make your ubuntu linux much more better in doing things . Let me show a handful of essential applications for your linux machine which would transform your ubuntu to a real star performer , doing almost everything you can do in windows . Ok , here is it :

1. WineHQ – If you were a  windows user , you might sometimes need to carry your favourite app to ubuntu. WineHQ is good at running such windows stuff . If you need to know if your favourite app runs on linux you can check this here . To download wine, check out this link .

2. VirtualBox – Most of you might be familiar with VirtualBox , from Sun Microsystems , a nice virtualization software which is available for free . There are many commercial virtualization softwares like vmware , which is much more powerful than virtualbox . To see a list of virtualization softwares have a look at this .

3.Scribus – Scribus is an opensource desktop publishing tool available for free . Scribus offers a modern and easy to use interface .and even supports advanced and professional features like CMYK color, separations, Spot Colors, ICC color management and  PDF creation. What to say more, visit its official website .

4.Gimp – Available by default in your Ubuntu machine . If you are interested in photo-editing  gimp would be a good start .Read more about gimp and how to use gimp .

5.Blender – Blender is an opensource 3-d content creation suite available for free . Blender is as effective as other commercial software like maya , 3-d max etc , without taking you in to complex processes. Blender is definitely worth a look , you can even watch  how powerful is blender viewing the blender, gallery page .

6. Other crazy stuff like vlc player ,firefox, evolution ,pidgin , openoffice , k3b disc burner , songbird , x-chat etc are definitely worth a look . Here are a few tutorials and reviews on getting in touch with various nice free software programs , take a look at them .

7.If you are interested in making your linux an eye-candy , then opt for compiz .Compiz offers a stylish look without sacrificing too much system resources . Oh ! , I know you need to make your linux appear similar to mac os , here it is it mac4lin .

linux vs windows 7

Windows is never equivalent to Linux as both are distinct operating systems . I , here present my personal opinion .

Can XFCE Desktop Environment,be an alternative to Gnome and Kde ?

Posted on 09 February 2010 by admin

In the Linux world with Ubuntu dominating the market to discuss about the comparison of Desktop Managers available for Linux is of good importance . By default Ubuntu comes with gnome desktop environment and Kubuntu comes with kde as the desktop manager . Considering the case of someone who is interested in trying out something different xfce might be fun . Xfce is a new desktop environment aimed at unix like operating system , providing nice features at smaller size and resources . Xfce can be installed in many platforms like freebsd , linux , solaris , cygwin and even macos . Xfce is definitely worth a look for users , who is interested in nice look and feel without sacrificing system resources . xfce is based on gtk 2 + just like gnome . It uses xfwm window manager . As it is always better to show something than to describe it , here I present you with some screenshots .

Also have a look at how xfce performs with compiz in Ubuntu 9.10 distribution .

The latest available version of XFCE is XFCE 4.6 . Visit xfce website for more details .

Applications like Mousepad text editor, Xfmedia audio player, Orage Calendar and Terminal are available by default for xfce environment . Printing tasks in xfce are managed by Xfprint . Xfburn is the cd/dvd burner program available for xfce . The default media player is Xfmedia player derived from Xine movie player . Thunar is the file manager for xfce .Xfce has almost everything needed by a normal user . Xfce but doesnot offer the flashy and eye-candy appearance of kde or large amount of applications like gnome .

Considering the progress xfce made in the following years , one day xfce may replace kde and gnome from our distros .Also connsider reading the comparison of kde vs gnome .

Basic Linux Commands worth knowing ..

Posted on 20 January 2010 by admin

Linux is an operating system  with a powerful shell , which enables you to do almost anything ,even though  that couldn’t be done with a GUI. Linux possess a hierarchical, unified filesystem which consist of directories and files. I wrote this tutorial mainly for noobs , keeping things simple . First thing you should remember is that bash commands are case-sensitive . “LS “is not same as ” ls “. Secondly don’t try to learn everything in a single day . Take your own time .. So let’s get started .

Take time to understand the following chart , everything in explained in detail , it shows hierarchical filesystem of Linux os.

linux filesystem

To start , fire your terminal , if you are using Ubuntu Linux , take accessories and from it select terminal . Here i mention the usage after the ” -” symbol.

Commands :

list directories -ls

change directory -cd  dir

Make a directory – mkdir directory-name

Remove a file -rm filename

To change file-permissions use chmod and chown (  chown for changing owners and chmod for changing mode of file )

Usage – chmod 777 filename .

4-read

2- write

1-write ( for allowing read only functionality to all use chmod 444 , if you need to add write functionality too add (4+2) , ie , chmod 666 .

Remove a directory – rm -R directory

Remove all files in a directory – rm *

To view the contents of a file – cat filename

To rename a file – mv old filename new filename ( same can be used for changing from one directory to another ).

To redirect output to a file you can use the symbol “  > “. For eg : Inorder to paste “reviewglitz.com ” to a file name reviewglitz just issue the command-

reviewglitz.com > reviewglitz.txt  in the terminal .

To open a text-editor type “nano filename “, nano is a nice text-editor for beginners .

To view your computer’s ip address and network properties – ifconfig (identical command for windows is ipconfig).

To view open connections in your computer -netstat

Processes in the computer can be listed with the command -ps

To kill a process issue – kill pid , where pid is a number you see when you issue ps command .

To list background jobs -bg

To bring a job to foreground -fg job

To connect to a server issue the Linux command – ssh -l username  ipaddress of server

To search text use the “grep” command in bash -grep “pattern “  files

To find files in your computer use the commands – whereis filename and locate filename

To view the date – cal or date

To show disk-usage df

To print the current logged in user – whoami

To show distro name and  version -uname

To find whether a host is alive use ping – ping ipaddress

To download a file use wget – wget filename

Press control +C to halt current command and control + Z to take the command to background .

To compress and decompress file use command tar – :

for .tar files – tar cf  filename

for tar.gz files – tar czvf filename

for tar.bz2 files -tar cjvf filename

The thing you should note is that compression and decompression commands vary only in the letter ” c ” and  ” x “. If you need to decompress use the command combined with ” x ” and for compression use “c “.

Please post your comments , so I can rectify my errors .
