Ok, I am a linux guy and most of you will be thinking that why I am writing this . Let me say , even though many people are agreeing with the statement Ubuntu is always better than Windows , there are a lot of people how think that Ubuntu has too few applications available for use . Ubuntu would be more secure , most faster and more stable , but is it up to par with Windows in doing things , like can we use photoshop cs 4 in linux , or can we play assassins creed 2 in Ubuntu . I am not promising you that you could , but I assure you that you can make your ubuntu linux much more better in doing things . Let me show a handful of essential applications for your linux machine which would transform your ubuntu to a real star performer , doing almost everything you can do in windows . Ok , here is it :

1. WineHQ – If you were a windows user , you might sometimes need to carry your favourite app to ubuntu. WineHQ is good at running such windows stuff . If you need to know if your favourite app runs on linux you can check this here . To download wine, check out this link .

2. VirtualBox – Most of you might be familiar with VirtualBox , from Sun Microsystems , a nice virtualization software which is available for free . There are many commercial virtualization softwares like vmware , which is much more powerful than virtualbox . To see a list of virtualization softwares have a look at this .

3.Scribus – Scribus is an opensource desktop publishing tool available for free . Scribus offers a modern and easy to use interface .and even supports advanced and professional features like CMYK color, separations, Spot Colors, ICC color management and PDF creation. What to say more, visit its official website .

[adsense2]

4.Gimp – Available by default in your Ubuntu machine . If you are interested in photo-editing gimp would be a good start .Read more about gimp and how to use gimp .

5.Blender – Blender is an opensource 3-d content creation suite available for free . Blender is as effective as other commercial software like maya , 3-d max etc , without taking you in to complex processes. Blender is definitely worth a look , you can even watch how powerful is blender viewing the blender, gallery page .

6. Other crazy stuff like vlc player ,firefox, evolution ,pidgin , openoffice , k3b disc burner , songbird , x-chat etc are definitely worth a look . Here are a few tutorials and reviews on getting in touch with various nice free software programs , take a look at them .

7.If you are interested in making your linux an eye-candy , then opt for compiz .Compiz offers a stylish look without sacrificing too much system resources . Oh ! , I know you need to make your linux appear similar to mac os , here it is it mac4lin .

Windows is never equivalent to Linux as both are distinct operating systems . I , here present my personal opinion .

In the Linux world with Ubuntu dominating the market to discuss about the comparison of Desktop Managers available for Linux is of good importance . By default Ubuntu comes with gnome desktop environment and Kubuntu comes with kde as the desktop manager . Considering the case of someone who is interested in trying out something different xfce might be fun . Xfce is a new desktop environment aimed at unix like operating system , providing nice features at smaller size and resources . Xfce can be installed in many platforms like freebsd , linux , solaris , cygwin and even macos . Xfce is definitely worth a look for users , who is interested in nice look and feel without sacrificing system resources . xfce is based on gtk 2 + just like gnome . It uses xfwm window manager . As it is always better to show something than to describe it , here I present you with some screenshots .

Also have a look at how xfce performs with compiz in Ubuntu 9.10 distribution .

Click here to view the embedded video.

The latest available version of XFCE is XFCE 4.6 . Visit xfce website for more details .

Applications like Mousepad text editor, Xfmedia audio player, Orage Calendar and Terminal are available by default for xfce environment . Printing tasks in xfce are managed by Xfprint . Xfburn is the cd/dvd burner program available for xfce . The default media player is Xfmedia player derived from Xine movie player . Thunar is the file manager for xfce .Xfce has almost everything needed by a normal user . Xfce but doesnot offer the flashy and eye-candy appearance of kde or large amount of applications like gnome .

Considering the progress xfce made in the following years , one day xfce may replace kde and gnome from our distros .Also connsider reading the comparison of kde vs gnome .

Have you ever had a situation where you searched google for hours but ended up in vain without finding what you needed?.If so this information is for you. Here we go

1.” ” searching with double quotes searches for the exact string .For eg: “www.reviewglitz.com” searches only for the phrase www.reviewglitz.com .This helps you to search exactly what you need.

2.To search with in a given website include the instruction “site:example.com”. for eg: site:reviewglitz.com searches for pages in the site www.reviewglitz.com.Always be careful not to include the string “www.”

3.If you need to exclude a particular word say “world” from your results give the search term as :example -world. ie, put a minus sign.

4.you can also use wildcards with which you are familiar. for eg: world * ,searches for world in the first place and anything that follows it is ignored.

5.”OR” operator can be used to specifically allow either one of several words.for eg: linux OR windows ,searches for either windows or linux or both.

It will back up your files to an external hard driveWith Rebit software installed on an external backup drive it saves everything automatically including all your data files, photos, music, movies, email, Windows operating system, software applications, drivers, passwords, bookmarks, preferences and everything you need for fast, full system recovery. It has a very good user friendly interface and we can backup almost to the exact state before the crashing occurred with some single mouse clicks.Rebit begins by making a one-time catalog of your PC’s entire disk drive. This process can take several hours, so be patient and let it run to completion. While the process takes place you can continue to use the computer as you normally would. I found some lag in some programs during the cataloging but it was nothing intolerable. While it is building of the backup drive is taking place you will see four processes running in Task Manager.

So my final word,Using Rebit to backup your computer is simple and effective and i recommend it to all our readers.Continue reading our reviews.

VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization environment , made by Sun Microsystems as part of its Sun xVM virtualization platform. A lot of host operating systems like Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2 Warp, Windows XP or Vista, and Solaris, are supported in this. Supported guest operating systems include FreeBSD, Linux, OpenBSD, OS/2 Warp, linux Kernal 2.4/2.6, Windows and Solaris. It is great for home use and for testing programs which may other wise interfere with the os.

Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) is a Linux kernel virtualization infrastructure. KVM currently supports native virtualization using Intel VT or AMD-V. A wide variety of guest operating systems work with KVM, including many flavours of Linux, BSD, Solaris, and Windows etc. KVM is included with Debian, OpenSuse and other Linux distributions.

Xen is a virtual machine monitor for 32 / 64 bit Intel / AMD (IA 64) and PowerPC 970 architectures. systems to be executed on the same . XEN is included with most popular Linux distributions such as Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL, Fedora and many others. It is very pleasant in its appeaance and easy to work with.It supports running several machines at the same time.

User Mode Linux (UML) was the first virtualization technology that was available for the Linux Operating system. It has less performance and stability compared with others . Coming version support for x86 virtualization to UML may reduce this disadvantages.

VMWare is one of the leaders of virtualization technologies. It has extended to linux platforms .It is known for its advanced features. But a hefty price tag always follows.

For a secured network we should be always aware about its working and its vulnerabilities. It is a good practice to get some network analysis programs to make the work easier. Here are a few of them worth reading. Continue reading →

A packet sniffer is a software that can block and analyse traffic passing through a network or subnetwork As data stream flow across the network, the sniffer captures each packet and eventually decodes and analyzes its content according to the appropriate RFC or other specifications. Here we bring you a list of the most popular sniffers used for network analysis. Here are first four tools are mainly meant for Linux Network security , while Cain and Abel is a windows only version.

1.Nmap

works on linux, windows, solaris and bsd.Nmap is a “Network Mapper”, used to discover computers and services on a computer network, thus creating a “map” of the network. Just like many simple port scanners, Nmap is capable of discovering passive services on a network despite the fact that such services aren’t advertising themselves with a service discovery protocol. In addition Nmap may be able to determine various details about the remote computers like operating system, firewall, details about lan card etc.

2.Wireshark

Wireshark is a open source network protocol analyzer for both Unix and Windows.it is also known as Ethereal until a trademark dispute in Summer 2006 You can interactively browse the capture data, delving down into just the level of packet detail you need. Wireshark has several powerful features, including a suprb display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session. It also supports thousands of protocols and media types. A tcpdump-like console version named tethereal is included. problem with wireshark is that it itself has many exploitable security loopholes

3.Tcpdump

Tcpdump was the most popular sniffer before the Wireshark came into market.Eventhough it has no good graphical interface it has less security holes and so more efficient than wireshark It also requires less system resources. While it doesn’t receive new features often, it is actively maintained to fix bugs and portability problems. It is great for tracking down network problems or monitoring activity.

4.Dsiff

it is actually a suite of networking tools like dsniff, filesnarf, mailsnarf, msgsnarf, urlsnarf, and webspy.Excelent for password sniffing and man in middle attack.

5.Cain and Abel

It is a windows only tool for a variety of network testing tasks. It can recover passwords by sniffing the network, crack encrypted passwords using rainbow Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, decrypting password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols.it has a good GUI interface
