Windows is never equivalent to Linux as both are distinct operating systems . I , here present my personal opinion .

Vlc player – One of the best , multimedia players available . It is a good option to carry this superb media player as it is capable of playing almost anything under the sun .

MediaPlayer Classic – Just like vlc player it supports a lot of video formats , and its huge collection of video codecs make it an excellent choice for  multimedia freaks.

CDBurner XP – Portable freeware for burning dvds and cds . CDBurner XP is capable of even burning bluray and HD dvds. CDBurner XP even offers features for burning iso images and is a freely available software.

FastStone Capture – FastStone Capture is a screen-shot utility , which supports a lot of features like  floating Capture Panel,shortcut keys , resize function crop function, text annotation, print support , e-mail, zoom  and lots more.

VDownloader – As the name suggest , VDownloader is small tool for downloading videos from  the internet .

Notepad ++ – Portable edition Document editor , which has advanced features like indentation and language support . Because of its ease of use and stability , it is usually kept as a replacement for notepad.

Portable OpenOffice – The complete office suite for your computer , and that too for free . Portable OpenOffice is really worth carrying  as it supports almost all document formats . Generally considered as an alternative to Microsoft Office.

Foxit PdfReader – A nice small pdf reader which even offers portability . Foxit Reader is a free software and considered as an alternative to adobe acrobat reader.

Pstart – Portable launcher , absolutely free of cost . Pstart is completely rid of ads or spyware .

CCleaner – CCleaner is a small tool that can take care of all your computer , from repairing registries to erasing your web browsing history .

Portable Firefox -  Firefox , not to mention it’s name . Everyone around here had been using firefox , for long days . Ya ,there is a portable version for your favourite web browser .

TrueCrypt Portable – Having unencrypted data on your harddisk can be a security risk , when the data contained is important . TrueCrypt can take care of all your data , ensuring privacy .

Portable Antivir Personal Edition – Portable antivirus comes in handy , when you are in a strange computer . Run your antivirus and things will be fine and you can work in full confidence.

Pidgin – I have heard a lot of Pidgin freaks crying , when pidgin was removed from Ubuntu 9.10 with empathy . Pidgin is an  instant messaging client  .Pidgin can take care of your AOL ,Yahoo, MSN and much more.

Gimp can be considered as an alternative to the Adobe Photoshop.I agree it is not as advanced as Photoshop ,but it is constantly upgraded and contributed that it will surely overtake Photoshop.Recommended for starters in Photoshop.

3.NOTEPAD++

Not just an alternative to Notepad , but this stuff  offers more advanced features,  like programming language recognition and intendation matching. Notepad should be definitely replaced with Notepad ++.

4.7-ZIP

Advanced compression tool than built in compression tools.It supports the best compression format .7zip.Definitely worth a try.

5.VLC PLAYER

Not to mention the name , better alternative to Media Player , with enhanced format support. Usually plays anything and inbuilt volume booster.

Here is a simple way to download a whole website without actually visiting all the pages.First up all go into the directory you wish to download the whole website using the command line and type in the following

wget-r-p-k-E http://www.example.com/dir/
Note  -E is to create .html extensions to XHTML or text files.Omit if not needed.It is however not possible for all type of sites  :-)

3. To change the root password

The first step is to reboot the system.When grub loads up, move the arrow key up/down to highlight and select the Linux kernel and press e to edit the GRUB commands before booting.Next, move the arrow key up/down and select the Linux kernel and press e again
Give a single space and then type the word ‘single’ at the end of
of the line.Hit ENTER key.Then press b to boot up with the single keyword, which will boot Linux into single user maintenance mode.Now you will get a command prompt ready to accept your commands.Voila!!!! you are done.Now just enter the ‘passwd’ comand to reset your password(without prompting for the older one ).Reboot and you are now the ROOT.However this is not working in all linux distros.

Video will start playing from your vlc player in just a few seconds.

Player from nullsoft which is a well known player since 1997.It is a very good player for playing audio files but not much better in case of video files.It has a modern interface and offers easier use.It has a lot of skins available over the internet and a lot of sound enhancement options too.But Winamp pro comes with a price tag of $19.95.

3.Windows Media Player
This is an inbuilt player in the windows os .A large amount of people have been using this for years.It is stylish in appearance and has a good amount of codecs too and is available for download as a kit.It has sound enhancement options like DFX.Micorsoft has been constantly updating this player to better standards.

4.KMPlayer
I came across it only a few months ago.But it has a lot of good options which makes it an excellent player.It has a large range of known file formats bundled to the installation file.It has the advantage of playing all the files in a folder with selection of only one file thus avoids the pain of making a playlist.

5.Real Player
A nice player with advanced video streaming features and specific movie formats .It is being used by a lot of people and has a pleasant appearance.It is also available with more advanced features that comes with a price tag.

1.VLC Player :In terms of a video player you can choose VLC player .This is an opensource program which contains a  lot of new features and is excellent in playing all sorts of files .You dont  need to install anything extra.It has a lovely in terface and various skins are too available.The sound of this player is higher than other players.You can give it a try.

2.7zip:If you need a archiver you need to get this one.It is much better than others and it has other formats that are not available with winzip or winrar.It has a clean interface and can be freely downloaded.For every windows user it is a must.

3.Notepad++:Are you used to rely heavily on editors ,then you can replace your notepad with notepad ++.It has a gnu licence and it has syntax support for almost all programming languages.multiple files can be opened in tabbed view and easier to use with.It has a lot of different functionalites compared to others and it is truely free from all forms of licences .

9.Utorrent:One of the best torrent client.It uses less memory and has good functionalities .It is very small in size and can be

10.Wireshark :Even though they arent very important in home ,they are indeed very powerful in network analysis and scanning.They both are opensource projects and are very useful.It can be used to examine data in the network and various symptoms of network attacks.
